Overview
HP QuickDrop allows users to transfer files wirelessly and effortlessly between HP PCs, Android, iOS, and Chromebook devices. It's a free service that helps users share their content between multiple devices instantly.

My Role
My role was to lead design efforts internally while working with an external agency abroad. Part of this effort was to explore advanced features like SMS QuickReply and Dual Display (extended and mirrored display functionality).

Opportunity
HP QuickDrop is one of the most well-loved and positively reviewed apps created by HP. To create even more value for users, and make HP devices more on par with Apple's productivity features, the team would design our device agnostic version of iMessage and Dual Display.

QuickReply
HMW help users be more productive by responding to messages from their desktop?

Scope
QuickReply would exist solely on desktop. QuickReply is not a full messaging experience — we don’t duplicate the experience on mobile.
We were limited to SMS (no MMS).
We would ask for access to your contacts and required a bluetooth connection.
We'd only save message history for 48 hours.
Besides the MMS restriction, these constraints were put in place to encourage simplicity, and to avoid getting overly in the weeds with full texting capabilities.

We tried a version with just one scrolling page that held all conversations:

We tried a version that was a bit more like existing apps as well, where you can navigate through past conversations on the left, and focus into one conversation on the right.

Results
We ended up sticking with the simpler of the two versions, V1, for the first release. The feature was shipped in 2022 to millions of users!
Dual Display
HMW create dual screen functionality within HP QuickDrop?

Scope
HP had partnered with Duet Display for extended and mirrored screen capabilities in 2020, and I had been working with both the internal and external teams to design an HP version of that app.
However, there was a desire for product longevity and scalability that didn't seem possible with this partnership. The team explored creating these features within the already successful HP QuickDrop.

Vision Work
We would include an additional bottom nav element for dual display on mobile, and an additional one in the left nav on desktop.
Results
While Dual Display as part of HP QuickDrop is currently more visionary, its concepts are affirmed by Duet for HP, a highly-rated app on the Google Play store.
